Moving Day
Moving day will be hectic - that's a promise - but if you plan
ahead, many of the inevitable headaches can be avoided.
Moving Company
- Book in advance.
- Pick up a packing kit which includes advice on how to pack, label
and load.
- If you need extra help, check with employment offices, schools and
community centers.
- You might want to think about a garage sale or donate unwanted furnishings
and goods to a local agency.
- Don't book the mover for too early in the day unless you know you
will get the key... otherwise you may pay the hourly rate while waiting
for keys to your new house.
Moving Day
- Arrange for care of the children and pets.
- Make special arrangements for meals.
- Bring your own telephone book if you are moving out of town.
- Check your agreement of purchase and sale to make sure you leave
behind the correct fixtures or chattels.
- Get a clear idea from your lawyer's office exactly when to expect
a key for the home you are purchasing.
Before You Leave Your Present Address
- Double check that you have notified the right people to
read the meters, and/or discontinue services, such as telephone,
water, hydro, gas, propane, and oil companies.
- Pick up a change of address kit from the post office and
put your charge account and other companies who send regular
interest bearing billings at the top of the list. Send your
forwarding address to the local post office and to magazine,
insurance companies, book and record clubs, stores and friends.
- Write or phone the utility company in the city to where
you are moving. Forward the necessary deposits with information
on where and when you will want services for fuel, water,
telephone, cable.
- Transfer insurance on your home, household goods and personal
possessions so that they will be covered at your new home
and enroute.
- Notify the principal of your children's school and get
covering letters regarding the status of your children's schooling.
Obtain birth, baptism and medical records for the transfer.
- Notify your doctor, dentist and
vet. Arranging for record transfers, letters of reference
and referrals is a good idea.
- Transfer bank accounts and have your present bank arrange
credit references in your new city.
When You Arrive At Your New Address
- Check on service for electricity, water and fuel. Ask the
mailman for mail which may have been held for your arrival.
- Update your driver's and automobile licence.
